Redescription of Temnocephala iheringi (Platyhelminthes: Temnocephalida) based on specimens from Pomacea canaliculata (Mollusca: Ampullariidae) of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil: the possible type host and type locality Rev. Bras. Zool.
Seixas,Samantha A.; Amato,José F. R.; Amato,Suzana B..
The original description of Temnocephala iheringi Haswell, 1893 was based on specimens collected by Hermann von Ihering from undetermined ampullariid apple snails, which at that time were identified as Ampullaria sp., and sent to William H. Haswell, with the type locality simply indicated as Brazil. The type specimens studied by Haswell were not found in the scientific collections of Brazil, Europe or Australia, and should be considered lost. In 1941, Pereira & Cuocolo collected specimens from apple snails, identified as Pomacea lineata (Spix in Wagner, 1827), at two localities (Guaicurús and Salobra) in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, central Brazil. These specimens could not be located either and should, thus, be considered lost as well. Pomacea...

Redescription of two land planarian species of Notogynaphallia Ogren & Kawakatsu (Platyhelminthes, Tricladida, Geoplaninae) and confirmation of the heterogeneity of the genus Zoologia
Carbayo,Fernando.
Notogynaphallia caissara (E.M. Froehlich, 1955) and N. fita (Froehlich, 1959) are redescribed. Both species are included in the so-called group 2 of E.M. Froehlich & Leal-Zanchet (2003), in Notogynaphallia, and are provided with a cephalic retractor muscle derived from the ventral longitudinal subepidermic muscle layer. A muscle retractor does not exist in the type-species of the genus. This is strong evidence of the morphological heterogeneity within the genus, as E.M. Froehlich & Leal-Zanchet (2003) previously proposed mainly based on characters of the reproductive organs.

Scent-robbing and fighting among male orchid bees, Eulaema (Apeulaema) nigrita Lepeletier, 1841 (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Euglossini) Biota Neotropica
Carvalho Filho,Fernando da Silva.
Male Neotropical orchid bees (Euglossini) collect volatile chemicals from floral and non-floral sources and store then in specialized hind tibial structures. The ultimate causes of euglossine fragrance collection remain a mystery. Recent evidence suggests that odoriferous substances play a role in euglossine courtship and serve as indicator of male genetic quality. Males of Eulaema nigrita were observed robbing scents from the detached hind legs of a conspecific male E. nigrita in Belém, Brazil. The hind leg seemed to have been detached during fights between males, since one male was missing a hind leg where the observation was made. This behavior appears to be common among males of E. nigrita since more than one case was observed on the same day. The...

Survey of social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae) in Amazon rainforest fragments in Acre, Brazil Acta Amazonica
GOMES,Bruno; KNIDEL,Samilla Vanessa de Lima; MORAES,Heroílson da Silva; SILVA,Marjorie da.
ABSTRACT The State of Acre, in the southwestern Brazilian Amazon, harbors high biodiversity and a high degree of endemisms. Nevertheless, there are few studies on the diversity of social wasps occurring in this region. This study presents a list of social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae) collected actively with attractive bait in three rainforest fragments in Acre. A total of 758 wasps belonging to 11 genera and 36 species were collected. Nineteen species were new distribution records for Acre and three others were new records for Brazil. Based on our results, further investigations should lead to a significant increase in Polistinae diversity in this region, producing information for biogeographic studies and management of natural areas.
